KATHY GUNTER
Strong Leader - Proven Results
Kathy Gunter was born and raised in Houston, Texas, by parents from Natchitoches, Louisiana. Growing up in the Baptist Church, she developed a foundation of faith, integrity, and service that continues to guide her today. A proud graduate of Kashmere Senior High School (Class of 1981), Kathy pursued higher education at Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas, earning a degree in Business Administration. In 1983, she became a dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and, in 1985, represented PQC as Miss Senior, becoming the first in her family to graduate from college.
Returning to Houston in 1986, Kathy earned her teaching certification at the University of Houston and later completed a Master’s Degree in Education Administration at the University of St. Thomas. Over a 28-year career in education, she served as a reading teacher, vocational instructor, and registrar across multiple Houston-area school districts, including North Forest ISD, Aldine ISD, Houston ISD, and Windham School District. She retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (Windham School District) with a record of dedication to student success.
Community Leadership & Service
Kathy has long been a committed civic leader, serving as precinct chair and engaging with countless organizations to strengthen her community. She is the founder of the Houston Gardens Civic Association (2016) and currently serves as its Vice President. She has also contributed to local initiatives through Super Neighborhoods #47, 48, 49/50, Union Pacific Black Employee Network, Target Hunger, Alan Rosen (Pct. 1), LISC, Air Alliance, Launch Point CDC, and more. Kathy led Houston Gardens as civic club president for five years and continues to advocate passionately as chair of the Environmental Justice Committee in Houston’s District B for Councilwoman Tarsha Jackson.
Her service has been recognized with numerous awards, including:

Kathy is a proud mother of three and a devoted member of Grace Church of Humble. Known for her kindness, modesty, and commitment to forgiveness and love, she credits her faith, family, and friends for her continued drive to serve others.
